Now we'll try to look a bit closer. Not in time, but in space. Take a look around you, what do you see? Do you see your own first AI already? And how do you treat it?
Artificial intelligence is in its very basic form just a network of neurons connected in a specific way. It might be a multi-layer network, it might be a deep-learning network, it might be a network designed to error rate lowering or high-speed learning. But still, it is just a set of neurons with specific weights that try to balance to achieve the certain goal.
In short: if you want to recognize pizza from non-pizza, you can teach it and it can do it.
(A psychotherapist friend of mine saw this inter-field connection as an eugenics, but that's probably of lack of understanding of what programming and artificial intelligence is).
Before too much term reduction that leads to vague and irrelevant comments like "humans are not machines", I don't think a human brain is just a form of artificial intelligence. It's much more than that, with subconsciousness, emotions, neurotransmitters, like serotonin, adrenalin, cortisol etc. When used properly, it's a killing machine that no general artificial intelligence can ever beat.
When used properly.
And that's what this post is about. How we use this grey thing we've got in our skulls, how do we take care of it, what direction and why we build it.
If you have a child (or anyone else you teach on daily basis for a long time) and you're a programmer, you probably already thought about this, in some way.
The way we build a neural network in children is very powerful. And very easy, because children have no knowledge, apart from the one we give them. It's the most effective CTRL + C (you) and CTRL + V (he or she) teaching we'll ever experience. Have you ever tried to teach your partner something completely new without any basic pre-steps?
They say that first 5-6 years are crucial for children:
In the first five years of life, your child’s brain develops more and faster than at any other time in his life. Your child’s early experiences – the things he sees, hears, touches, smells and tastes – stimulate his brain, creating millions of connections. Jesus power, psychosomatic self-healing or the hand of the Universe all-mighty. Whatever you believe is true in your own brain design. The same way we configure a computer program to work with maximum 2 GB memory although there is more than 8 GB RAM in total, it believes there are only 2 GB of memory in the whole universe.
We function the same way. If you believe that you have to work until you're 65 years old and then you'll get a reward in form of retirement, you'll build your life around it. If you believe that all you need for life is a place to sleep, good friends and helping others, you'll be "working" for the whole life on this image. There is no good, nor wrong, nor a better way to do things - it's the way axioms are applied to the whole neural system.
My selection would be:
Living in the present moment with minimal influence of linear regression of past experiences. Because only this way we can learn something new, or rather unlearn patterns that work no more. This will be a huge challenge for disruptive changes in AI itself.
This is super difficult because neural networks naturally tend to build on experience. How can you recognize an apple? Because your parents showed you an apple 300 times and said "apple". How can we remove such expectations and still be able to live in society?
In my first 6 years, I probably learned dichotomic perception of worlds. This is good and this is bad, nothing like "it depends", "well sometimes" or "you and somebody else might be different persons".
With these base-stones I've decided that alcohol is bad, social networks are for stupid people and that I know best what everybody needs to do. I tried to re-evaluate this from time to time, but it wasn't until 25 years and my first child, till I really started. Why? Because I realized I'll just copy-paste to him all my beliefs, whether I want it or not. Did I want him to be like me? Yes, of course. But did I want to believe in dichotomic worlds of ego? Not at all.
Since that moment I started to think what kind of son I'd like to have and started to move from personal benefits, more and more to the community, the power of united group over individual hedonist and communication with people with different values than I have.
I tend to suppress anger, fear, shame or love (because of fear of rejection). And other people didn't understand me, and my son didn't understand me when I was angry when he crossed a street where a car could kill him. I had to change that.
Without clear emotion expression, it's very difficult for others to understand us. Some people express kindness when afraid, I express happiness when I'm nervous.
So being ok with all kinds of emotions would be a 3rd axiom I'd pick.
You know the saying that it takes 21 days to build a habit? That's because neural network is like a muscle. If you train it enough one direction, it will become natural for it.
What beliefs you reinforce every day? What are those you'd like to change a bit if that was possible?
This is very typical for all the self-help posts and books you've read, but there is still nothing going on. This is also called Anecdotal evidence.
What works for me, works for me because of my history, my life events, and my complex settings. If somebody will start open-source berserk mode on Github, joining PHP communities and having a baby at the same time, it might not go so well.
So always think about yourself, whether this or that information is useful for you personally.
In both cases beware of nihilism, that leads evolution nowhere. In circles. And beyond.
Another idea I have is that everything is optional. If I believe that I should be a programmer, I'll do everything to make that happen. But when I start to think about myself as a writer and a person who loves to connect people no matter what, I can slowly drop programming from my daily activities.
So when you decide that you can quit your job, find a new partner, move from your parents, write a post about that stuff you love doing after work for free or go out and just be one day alone, I believe you can do it.
I wrote that neural network is a muscle. I found out when I tried to learn too many things at once, you know in university, I very quickly forgot all this. I read this book about healing traumas and it has very nice approach between lines in every chapter:
"The slower you go, the further you get."
Do you want to run a marathon? Maybe it's not a good idea to run it right away without training. Personally, I've tried to train 1 month before it and went running for 4times before I run a half marathon. But I was dead and I never want to do that again.
If we'd train our neural networks this way, there would be tons of closed doors soon.
On the other hand, most of the changes that I took slowly, like programming, turned out to be pretty well.
One last thing that I've noticed is that neural networks have natural tendency to replicate themselves. But not only the outer way, like telling your friend he should be programmer instead of working at McDonald's.
But also the inner way, in ourselves. How? When we believe in freedom at work, freedom out of national borders, freedom with drugs, with Zen spirituality... we might want freedom in relationships. Or we believe in God, strict Christianity church, strict rules, we have sex with a random stranger and we'll get pregnant. We have to keep the baby because we believe all this cohesion (true story of my friend).
One example for all? This post is just set of my thoughts that want to be replicated or rather reflected in your neural network. In human words: I want to inspire you, to talk about this, to think about this, to give me your view of all this.
This all leads me to my axiom point 2., to re-evaluate what value I spread in the world and my little son.
So these are few thoughts from my neural network about other neural networks. Nothing more.
